New Jersey Governor signs law protecting reproductive and gender-affirming care

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has signed Senate Bill 2260 into law, expanding legal protections for individuals seeking reproductive healthcare and gender-affirming care. The legislation, which passed along party lines, aims to establish New Jersey as a sanctuary for these services by prohibiting state agencies from cooperating with out-of-state investigations into legal medical procedures.

The law criminalizes interference with reproductive healthcare services, including physical obstruction of clinic entrances, bodily injury, and intimidation of patients or providers. Violators could face prison sentences ranging from 18 months to 10 years, alongside civil penalties and fines.

Critics and pro-life advocates argue the law is vaguely worded and could be used to criminalize peaceful activities, such as prayer or sidewalk counseling, by classifying them as intimidation or emotional harm. Supporters maintain the law is conduct-based, targeting physical obstruction and threats rather than speech or religious expression.
