New Jersey Governor signs law targeting interference with reproductive healthcare

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has signed legislation, designated as P. L. 2026, c. 74, which establishes criminal and civil penalties for interference with reproductive health care and gender-affirming services. The law creates the offense of “interference with reproductive health care services,” targeting actions intended to intimidate patients or providers, physically obstruct facility entrances, or damage property related to these services.

Pro-life advocates have raised concerns that the law may infringe upon First Amendment rights. Critics, including New Jersey Right to Life and Live Action founder Lila Rose, argue that the statute is “inherently subjective” and could criminalize peaceful activities such as prayer, sidewalk counseling, or holding signs if they are perceived as intimidating. The legislation also includes provisions regarding buffer zones, such as banning filming and sharing videos within 100 feet of certain clinics. Violators could face fines of up to $10,000 and up to 18 months in prison.
