New Jersey health officials urge blood donations amid shortage

New Jersey is facing a significant shortage of blood products, prompting state health officials to issue urgent calls for donations. New Jersey Health Commissioner Dr. Raynard E. Washington donated blood at the New Jersey Blood Services’ Freehold Donor Center to encourage residents to do the same.

The shortage is part of a broader national trend, with the American Red Cross declaring an emergency blood shortage due to increased demand and low supplies. In New Jersey, New Jersey Blood Services has declared two states of emergency following a decline in donations exacerbated by heat waves, severe storms, and power outages.

While summer typically sees a seasonal dip in donations alongside an increase in trauma-related demand, officials noted the current situation is particularly pronounced. Medical experts emphasize that blood and platelets cannot be manufactured and rely entirely on human donors for essential uses, including routine surgeries, cancer treatments, and trauma care.
