New Jersey identifies 25 lowest-scoring math school districts

Data from the 2024 New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) reveals significant disparities in math proficiency across the state. Based on the most recent full data set, the bottom 25 school districts have been identified for having the lowest percentages of students scoring at Level 4 or 5, which the state defines as proficient.

While the statewide math proficiency rate was approximately 41 percent, every district on the bottom 25 list falls significantly below that average, with many scoring below half of the state rate. The low-performing districts include a variety of locations, ranging from urban centers to shore towns and a district in Cumberland County where zero students achieved proficiency.
