New Jersey immigration debate intensifies after fatal crash kills infant

A fatal crash in Jackson Township, New Jersey, has ignited a debate over state immigration policies and enforcement. On August 28, a vehicle allegedly driven by 20-year-old Maria Cobon-Guzmán struck a mother and her two children in a kosher grocery store parking lot. The nine-month-old boy, Yitzchok Rosenberg, died from his injuries, while his mother and five-year-old sister were hospitalized.

Authorities have charged Cobon-Guzmán with manslaughter and other offenses, noting she had never held a driver’s license. The vehicle owner, 22-year-old Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, faces charges for knowingly creating a substantial risk of death by allowing an unlicensed driver to operate the car. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Lazaro-Flores had been deported five times in October 2023 before remaining in the country, while Cobon-Guzmán entered the country and was released into the interior.

Congressman Chris Smith (R, NJ-4) has called for an end to New Jersey’s sanctuary-style policies, specifically criticizing the state's ability for undocumented residents to obtain driver's licenses. ICE has lodged immigration detainers against both women, seeking custody for potential enforcement following the conclusion of criminal proceedings.
