New Jersey immigration policies under scrutiny after ICE pursuit leads to crash

A vehicle collision in North Brunswick, New Jersey, has sparked political debate regarding the state’s immigration policies. The incident occurred on U.S. Route 130 when a driver, identified as an undocumented immigrant, fled from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during a targeted operation. According to ICE, the driver ignored repeated verbal warnings and fled at a high rate of speed, eventually running a red light and colliding with a Tesla.

The Tesla was driven by Dr. Penelope Cohen, the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen, who sustained a leg injury in the crash. Following the collision, the driver attempted to flee on foot before being apprehended by federal agents.

Republican lawmakers have criticized Governor Mikie Sherrill and the state’s “Trust Directive,” which limits cooperation between local police and ICE. Critics argue that New Jersey’s sanctuary status creates public safety risks and emboldens illegal behavior. Conversely, some Democratic representatives have used the incident to call for the abolition of ICE.
