New Jersey investigates 6,600 noncitizen voter registrations

New Jersey is facing scrutiny following the disclosure that approximately 6,600 noncitizens were registered to vote through the state’s motor-vehicle system between June 2023 and June 2024. Governor Mikie Sherrill has attributed the issue to a “software error,” though the vendor, IDEMIA, has disputed being solely responsible.

A group of 19 House Republicans, led by Representative Jeff Van Drew, has sought detailed answers regarding the incident. The lawmakers have requested information on which elections were affected, how the validation process failed, whether any election results were impacted by these registrations, and what accountability measures will be taken. While a preliminary review suggests fewer than 400 of the registered individuals cast ballots, the incident has intensified the national debate over election integrity.

In her response to congressional inquiries, Governor Sherrill stated that her administration is “fully committed to ensuring that elections in New Jersey remain free and fair.” However, critics have noted that her responses did not explicitly identify the specific elections affected or clarify how individuals who identified as noncitizens were validated as eligible voters.
