New Jersey launches student loan relief for high-need teachers

The Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) has opened applications for a new round of the New Jersey Teacher Loan Redemption Program. The initiative aims to recruit and retain educators in high-need subject areas by providing up to $20,000 in student loan relief.

To qualify, teachers must be New Jersey residents, hold a current state teaching certification, and have been hired on or after January 18, 2022. The relief is distributed in annual payments of up to $5,000, which equals 25% of the participant's principal and interest, for up to four years beginning in the 2026-27 academic year.

Eligible subject areas include mathematics, science, special education, English as a Second Language, world languages, and Career and Technical Education. Participation is also limited to teachers working at specific schools designated as eligible under state law. The application window for the 2026-27 school year is currently open and will close on September 30, 2026.
