New Jersey lawmakers propose micro-hospital legislation

Democratic lawmakers in New Jersey have introduced a bill that would allow licensed hospitals to establish micro-hospitals. These smaller facilities are designed to provide primary and emergency care, laboratory services, and X-rays with lower operating costs than traditional acute care hospitals.

Under the proposed legislation, micro-hospitals could have up to 50 patient beds, provided they are located more than five miles from any competing acute care facility. The bill also allows existing hospitals to convert or restructure current sites into micro-facilities without location restrictions.

Senator Joe Vitale, chairman of the Senate health committee and a bill sponsor, stated that the initiative aims to prevent the loss of hospitals in rural and underserved communities. Unlike traditional acute care facilities in the state, micro-hospitals would not be required to maintain operating rooms or surgical teams.
