New Jersey legalizes plug-in balcony solar panels

New Jersey has legalized the use of plug-in balcony solar panels for qualifying residents. Governor Mikie Sherrill signed legislation that exempts portable energy generators under 1,200 watts from utility interconnection and metering requirements.

The law prevents municipalities from requiring permits or licenses for these systems and prohibits landlords and homeowner associations from banning them. While landlords must be notified 14 days in advance and may still restrict the size and placement of the units, they can no longer block their installation entirely.

These portable systems use microinverters to plug into standard 120-volt wall outlets. To ensure the safety of utility workers, the inverters are designed to stop feeding the grid during power outages. Proponents suggest these units offer a cost-effective alternative to traditional rooftop solar, with the potential to reduce monthly electricity bills by up to $50.
