New Jersey moves forward with two bills tightening sportsbook rules

The New Jersey Assembly’s Tourism, Gaming, and the Arts Committee unanimously approved two separate pieces of legislation aimed at increasing oversight of online sports betting. Bill A4002, which passed the committee 7‑0, would require licensed sportsbooks to publish the reasons behind account restrictions and wagering limits, covering caps on bets, deposits, withdrawals and play‑time controls. The measure does not bar limiting accounts but seeks greater transparency for bettors, many of whom turn to offshore platforms for fewer constraints.

In a related vote, AB 4003 also cleared the committee without dissent. The bill would bar sportsbooks from offering promotional credits, bonuses or other incentives to players who are enrolled in responsible‑gaming programs, imposing fines of at least $500 per violation. A companion Senate bill, SB 3420, is awaiting its first committee vote. Both proposals reflect growing legislative focus on consumer protection in the regulated betting market and could set precedents for other states.
