New Jersey noncitizen voter registration probe intensifies

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon told Newsmax that the Justice Department is treating New Jersey’s non‑citizen voting issue as a “very serious matter” after requesting records on roughly 6,600 noncitizens who were improperly registered to vote. Governor Mikie Sherrill initially said her administration would not comply with the request, but the DOJ’s civil‑rights division is pursuing an investigation into possible violations of federal election law.

The problem originates from a software error at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission that added applicants who identified as noncitizens to the state’s voter rolls. Homeland Security estimates as many as 35,152 potential noncitizens could be on those rolls. The Justice Department has warned that criminal charges could be considered for illegal voting and is pressing states, including New Jersey, to clean their voter files.
