New Jersey officials rally for Polluters Pay Act

Elected officials, residents, and environmental advocates in Essex and Hudson counties are rallying for the passage of the ‘Polluters Pay to Make New Jersey More Affordable Act’. The legislation aims to hold major fossil fuel extractors financially accountable for their role in the climate crisis.

If passed, the act is projected to generate $50 billion over 20 years to fund statewide infrastructure upgrades and resilience projects. These funds would be used to mitigate the impacts of extreme heat and flooding, protecting communities with overwhelmed stormwater systems and high flood risks.

Supporters, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Jersey City Mayor James Solomon, argue the bill is a matter of accountability and economic fairness. They contend that the financial burden of climate-related disasters should shift from taxpayers and local municipalities to the companies profiting from fossil fuels. Additionally, advocates suggest the legislation could create approximately 18,000 well-paying jobs in sectors such as healthcare and electrical work.
