New Jersey panel deadlocks on proposed 34% health premium hike for teachers
The School Employees' Health Benefits Commission in New Jersey has deadlocked on a proposal to significantly increase health insurance premiums for active school employees. A 4-4 vote on Wednesday prevented a final decision, leaving teachers, administrators, and support staff in a state of uncertainty just as the open enrollment period approaches.
State actuaries have recommended a 34.4% average premium increase for 2027, which includes a 32.4% rise in medical premiums and a 45.5% increase in prescription drug premiums. The proposed hikes aim to address rising medical and prescription costs, rebuild plan reserves that have fallen below target levels, and repay funds following a state-authorized temporary transfer.
The deadlock was attributed to a vacancy on the nine-member commission, as one administration seat has remained empty since at least 2024. Steve Beatty, president of the New Jersey Education Association, argued against the increases, stating that union members cannot “just blindly accept” the proposed rates. The commission is scheduled to reconvene in two weeks to attempt another vote.
