United States to end Daylight Saving Time on November 1

Daylight Saving Time is scheduled to end across most of the United States on Sunday, November 1, 2026. At 2 a.m. local time, clocks will be set back one hour to 1 a.m., marking the transition to standard time. This shift will result in earlier evening darkness and increased morning light as winter approaches.

Despite the House of Representatives passing the Sunshine Protection Act in July 2026 to make daylight saving time permanent, the legislation remains stalled in the Senate. Until the bill passes both chambers and is signed by the president, the biannual clock change remains the federal standard.

Safety experts and organizations have noted the practical implications of the change. Home Age Fit has urged older adults to review indoor lighting and stair safety, noting that earlier sunsets increase fall risks for seniors. In Maryland, the transition is expected to significantly shift sunset times, moving from approximately 6:06 p.m. on Halloween to 5:04 p.m. the following day.
