New Jersey Noncitizen Voter Registration Error Triggers Congressional Probe
Between June 2023 and June 2024 New Jersey’s automatic voter registration system added roughly 6,600 non‑citizens to the state voter rolls, about 400 of whom cast ballots, according to Governor Mikie Sherrill. The governor attributed the mistake to a software error at the Motor Vehicle Commission, a claim disputed by the system’s vendor, IDEMIA, which says the state agencies were responsible.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil sent a letter to Lt. Gov. and Secretary of State Dale Caldwell demanding records on the registrations, compliance with federal election laws, and communications with IDEMIA, with a response deadline of Aug. 17. The request follows a Justice Department lawsuit seeking the statewide voter file. State Senator Joe Pennacchio and other Republicans have called for a DOJ investigation, while the Department of Homeland Security highlighted four non‑citizen voters in a press release. Politico noted that New Jersey’s system relies on an “honor system” that does not verify citizenship.
