New Jersey reduces REAL ID appointment wait times to three days
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) has reported a significant reduction in wait times for REAL ID appointments, dropping from an average of 73 days at the start of 2026 to just three days. This 96% reduction comes as residents prepare for holiday travel, following TSA requirements that mandate REAL ID-compliant identification for domestic flights.
The agency attributed the improvement to operational changes rather than increased spending. Key updates include the acceptance of digital proof of residency, such as electronic bank statements and utility bills, which has reportedly halved failed transactions and repeat visits. Additionally, the MVC has streamlined document verification processes and expanded REAL ID services to seven more agency locations.
So far in 2026, the MVC has issued 750,000 REAL IDs and is approaching the one million mark for the year. Governor Mikie Sherrill stated that the improvements were aimed at making government services more efficient for residents.
