New Jersey reports 6,600 noncitizens registered to vote due to error
New Jersey officials recently reported a processing error at the state Motor Vehicle Commission that resulted in approximately 6,600 individuals who identified themselves as noncitizens being registered to vote between June 2023 and June 2024. Notably, these individuals reportedly did not falsely claim citizenship but were registered despite their self-identification as noncitizens.
Similar issues have been reported in other states. Virginia removed over 6,500 registrations associated with declared noncitizens, while North Carolina is investigating nearly 1,600 flagged registrations. Alabama, Iowa, and Ohio have also reported findings involving noncitizen registrants.
Critics, including Chuck DeVore of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, argue these incidents reflect a systemic vulnerability rather than isolated clerical errors. They suggest that reliance on self-attestation and minimal verification processes in various states contributes to the presence of ineligible voters on official rolls.
