New Jersey residents report widespread economic strain

A new Rutgers-Eagleton Poll indicates that a vast majority of New Jersey residents are experiencing financial strain, with 77% rating the state economy as either ‘poor’ or ‘fair.’ Only 19% of respondents described the state economy as ‘good’ or ‘excellent.’

Residents reported significant difficulty affording essential services. Approximately 65% struggle with housing costs, while 66% face challenges with gasoline and transportation. Healthcare costs are a burden for 63% of residents, and 61% report difficulty paying for both utilities and groceries.

The poll highlights a rising intensity in financial hardship since March. Specifically, the number of people finding education expenses, including student loans, ‘very difficult’ to afford rose to 45%. Childcare also remains a major pressure point, with 46% of those with such expenses calling them ‘very difficult’ to manage. Low-income households face even greater volatility, with over 80% of those earning $50,000 or less reporting struggles with housing, groceries, and utilities.
