New Jersey residents see decline in TV viewing and free time
An analysis of American Time Use Survey data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals a significant shift in leisure habits among New Jersey residents between 2020 and 2024. Daily television viewing has decreased by 24%, dropping from 3 hours and 13 minutes to 2 hours and 27 minutes.
Despite the reduction in screen time, overall daily free time in the state has declined by 14%, falling from 5 hours and 36 minutes to 4 hours and 50 minutes. This trend places New Jersey 10th among states for lost free time. Other changes include a decrease in daily reading from 20 minutes to 15 minutes, while time spent relaxing and thinking increased from 28 to 34 minutes.
Notably, exercise remains a prominent activity in New Jersey, with residents working out at 2.16 times the national rate. The data suggests that the time saved from reduced television consumption has not resulted in increased downtime, as commuting times have risen by approximately 21%.
