New Jersey Secures $2.5 B PFAS Settlement with DuPont, 3M and Others

A federal judge approved more than $2.5 billion in settlements that New Jersey reached with DuPont, Chemours, Corteva and 3M to resolve claims over PFAS ("forever chemicals") contamination.

DuPont, Chemours and Corteva will pay $875 million over 25 years for natural‑resource damages, fund a $1.2 billion remediation program and set aside a $475 million reserve to guarantee cleanup of four former industrial sites. 3M will contribute $400‑450 million for drinking‑water contamination claims.

Chief Judge Renee Marie Bumb described the agreements as fair, reasonable and in the public interest. PFAS are linked to health issues such as elevated cholesterol, low birth weight, reduced vaccine response and certain cancers. The companies continue to face other litigation, including a recent lawsuit by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
