New Jersey sues Amazon over driver pay and working conditions

The New Jersey Attorney General's office filed an antitrust lawsuit in federal court in Newark, accusing Amazon.com Inc. of using its market power over independent Delivery Service Partner (DSP) firms to suppress wages and impose poor working conditions on thousands of delivery drivers in the state. Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said the complaint targets a monopsony arrangement in which Amazon allegedly forces DSPs to keep driver pay low and restricts drivers from unionizing or moving between firms. Amazon denied the allegations, stating that DSP drivers are free to choose their employer and that the claims are "just wrong." The suit joins other antitrust actions against Amazon by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the state of California, and highlights broader concerns about labor practices in the gig‑economy logistics sector.

Amazon’s DSP network delivers roughly 20 million packages a day worldwide, making the outcome of the case potentially significant for the company's logistics model and for independent contractors across the United States.
