New Jersey to ban cell phones in public schools during school hours
New Jersey will implement a new regulation starting with the 2026-2027 school year that prohibits the use of cell phones and other personal devices during the entire school day in public schools. The policy follows a “bell-to-bell” model, meaning devices must remain out of students' reach from the start to the end of the school day, except for specific permitted circumstances.
School districts are required to establish storage and control mechanisms, such as locking pouches, lockers, or other school-administered systems. In some locations, such as Pennsauken, students may be required to keep devices turned off and secured in magnetic pouches.
Educational authorities and teachers state the measure aims to reduce classroom distractions, increase academic concentration, and improve social interaction among students. Educators have noted that constant screen use has led to decreased peer interaction and students focusing on social media rather than lessons. Exceptions will be made for students with individualized education plans, medical conditions, translation needs, or other district-authorized situations.
