New Jersey voter registration controversy prompts Congressional inquiry
Members of the House Administration and Judiciary Committees are seeking detailed records from software vendor IDEMIA North America regarding the registration of approximately 6,600 noncitizens on New Jersey voter rolls. While Governor Mikie Sherrill has attributed the issue to a “serious software error” at the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission occurring between June 2023 and June 2024, IDEMIA has disputed this claim.
The software provider stated that the system correctly recorded and transmitted “no” answers from individuals who indicated they were not U.S. citizens during the application process. IDEMIA maintains that the data was processed according to the state’s design and that officials had access to the citizenship information.
Reports indicate that roughly 400 of the registered noncitizens cast ballots. In response to the controversy, Governor Sherrill has expressed support for voter ID measures and ordered the removal of the affected names from the rolls.
