New Life-Cycle-Based Evaluation model proposed for digital health technologies
Researchers have proposed a new framework called Life-Cycle-Based Evaluation (LCBE) to assess digital health technologies, particularly those utilizing artificial intelligence. Published in the International Journal of Technology Assessment in Health Care, the proposal was developed under the European project ASSESS-DHT and involves participation from the Fundación Pública Andaluza Progreso y Salud.
Traditional Health Technology Assessment (HTA) models, originally designed for pharmaceuticals, struggle to evaluate digital tools that undergo continuous updates via software or AI algorithm changes. The LCBE model suggests a continuous evaluation process rather than a single point-in-time analysis. It structures assessment into five stages: preclinical, experimental or shadow mode, initial clinical, comparative, and surveillance.
The framework accounts for variables such as autonomy levels, telemedicine, interoperability, and human factors. It also categorizes medical purposes into six areas: prevention, monitoring, prognosis, diagnosis, treatment, and disability relief.
