New mayors appointed in O’Higgins and Roscio
In Chile, former councilwoman Raquel Torres Cuevas has been elected as the new mayor of O’Higgins in the Aysén Region. Following two rounds of voting within the municipal council, Torres secured four out of six votes to complete the term of the late mayor José Claudio Fica, who passed away from a heart attack in mid-August.
Torres expressed her commitment to maintaining the previous administration's legacy and working collaboratively with the council to advance community projects. Her appointment marks a trend in the Aysén Region, where three municipalities are now led by women.
In Venezuela, the municipal council of Roscio in Bolívar state has sworn in councilman José Vidal as acting mayor. This follows the formal resignation of Wuihelm Torrellas, who cited health reasons for stepping down from the 2025–2029 term. While Torrellas stated his departure was necessary for personal and family health, the resignation follows recent local protests regarding power outages and has faced speculation from political detractors.
