Italy healthcare sector implements digital and community-based care models
Various Italian regions are advancing healthcare through technological innovation and community-based infrastructure. In Basilicata, the ‘Telea’ project has launched an 18-month experimental telemedicine program funded by the PNRR. This initiative provides continuous home monitoring and digital assistance for 447 citizens over the age of 80 suffering from chronic illnesses or cognitive fragility.
In Salerno, the ASL Salerno received recognition at the Forum PA Sanità 2026 for its Digital Socio-Sanitary Network. The model utilizes 140 virtual community clinics and 53 telemedicine houses to overcome geographic barriers, significantly reducing patient travel distances and CO2 emissions.
Infrastructure developments are also underway across other regions. Bergamo has inaugurated new Community Houses and an Adolescents' House to provide integrated multidisciplinary services. In Massafra, a new Community Hospital with 20 beds is nearing completion, while in Susa, existing community services continue to operate within hospital spaces despite construction delays. Additionally, the Avezzano hospital has integrated new continuous EEG monitoring technology for complex neurological patients.
