New methods emerge for monitoring dementia and brain aging
New research and clinical observations are highlighting different methods for identifying early signs of dementia and cognitive decline.
A study conducted by researchers in the Netherlands, utilizing data from the Alzheimer Center Amsterdam, suggests that a discrepancy between a person’s chronological age and their biological brain age may indicate a higher risk of dementia. Using computer-based tools to analyze MRI scans, researchers calculated the ‘brain-predicted age difference’ (brain-PAD). This metric identifies when a brain appears structurally older than the individual’s actual age. The study involved 799 participants, including those with mild cognitive impairment and those experiencing subjective cognitive decline.
In a separate development, a neurologist has highlighted a simple, informal screening method involving three specific hand movements. This brief physical test is designed to observe coordination and response patterns that may relate to cognitive health. While not a replacement for clinical evaluations, the movement-based check is intended as an accessible way for individuals to notice potential changes in brain function that may warrant professional medical consultation.
