New Mexico bans new uranium mining leases on state lands

New Mexico Land Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard has issued an executive order banning the leasing of state lands for new uranium mining and related activities. The order aims to protect communities, land, and water, particularly focusing on the environmental and health impacts faced by indigenous communities and New Mexico families.

Instead of new development, the State Land Office will prioritize the cleanup of legacy uranium sites. New Mexico has a history as a major uranium producer, leaving behind over 1,000 former mining, milling, and exploratory drilling sites. Approximately 250 of these are considered abandoned, with at least 50 located on state trust lands.

The executive order does not restrict existing permits or business leases associated with valid existing mineral rights. Garcia Richard called for the uranium industry and the federal government to prioritize and fund the remediation of these legacy sites.
