New Mexico election observers report ID issues in Union County

The nonpartisan group Observe New Mexico Elections (ONME) reported that New Mexico’s primary election was generally calm, orderly, and well-administered across all 33 counties. After deploying dozens of observers to monitor processes such as voting machine certification, poll worker training, and ballot counting, the group found no systemic or widespread irregularities.

However, observers identified specific challenges regarding voter access and consistency. In Union County, a rural area in northeast New Mexico, reports indicated that approximately 150 voters were inappropriately asked to present physical forms of identification. While New Mexico law does not require ID to vote, poll workers in that location reportedly told voters that presenting identification is not mandatory but would eventually be required, and that they should get used to the practice.

ONME also noted areas for improvement in language access, instructions for accessible voting systems, and consistent adherence to voter check-in procedures. The organization intends to share these findings and recommendations with county and election officials to improve processes ahead of the November general election.
