New Mexico faces severe storms and flood risks

New Mexico is experiencing a significant weather shift characterized by a divide between monsoon moisture and dry air. Northern and eastern regions face ongoing storm threats, with flood watches active for several areas including the Animas River Basin, Black Mesa Area, Chinle Valley, Chuska Mountains, and Defiance Plateau. Grant and San Juan counties are also under flood advisories due to saturated ground.

In central and western New Mexico, a plume of monsoon moisture is driving showers and thunderstorms. While storms are expected to move northeast at 20 to 45 miles per hour—potentially limiting flood severity—the primary risks include heavy downpours, frequent lightning, gusty winds, and localized flash flooding.

The weather pattern is expected to transition midweek as drier air moves into the northwestern half of the state, leading to fewer storms and rising temperatures. However, monsoon moisture is projected to surge back into western New Mexico by Thursday.
