New Mexico jury awards $47 million in tanker truck crash case
A New Mexico jury has awarded $47 million to Austin Drewry Jackson and his mother, Crystal Drewry, following a 2022 head-on collision involving a commercial tanker truck. The accident occurred on a foggy night near Carlsbad on NM 128, when a truck operated by Pilot Thomas Logistics LLC and its subsidiary, Maxum Petroleum Operating Company, struck Jackson’s pickup truck.
The collision left Jackson, who was 21 at the time, with severe traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, and internal organ injuries. He is currently bedridden and requires 24/7 assistance. The lawsuit alleged that the tanker driver was speeding in foggy conditions; testimony indicated the driver was traveling above the 55 mph limit and had a history of speeding discipline within the company.
While the trucking companies initially offered a $100,000 settlement, the plaintiffs proceeded to trial. Crystal Drewry stated the verdict is intended to ensure her son receives necessary long-term care.
