New Mexico Lobos defeat UTEP Miners 61-7 in conference opener

The New Mexico Lobos defeated the UTEP Miners 61-7 in their Mountain West Conference football opener in Albuquerque. New Mexico established a 21-0 halftime lead, fueled by Toa Fa'avae, who threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns.

The Lobos' defense dominated the contest, forcing five turnovers including three interceptions. Austin Brawley contributed a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown and a blocked punt for a safety. New Mexico's rushing attack was also significant, led by Cameron Mathews, who recorded 108 yards on six carries.

UTEP, which fell to a 1-4 season record, avoided a shutout in the fourth quarter when backup quarterback Raymond Moore III scored on an 86-yard touchdown run. Following the loss, New Mexico improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, marking their first conference win since 2018 and extending a 10-game home winning streak.
