New Mexico man killed in fatal bear attack

A man was killed in a bear attack in the community of Crystal, located within the Navajo Nation reservation in New Mexico. The Navajo Nation Police Department reported that officers from the Window Rock district responded to the incident around 1:00 p.m. local time.

During the response, police shot at the bear, which initially fled into nearby woods before being located and neutralized by authorities. The identity of the victim and the specific species of the bear have not yet been released. Investigators and wildlife officials attended the scene.

This incident marks the first fatal bear attack in New Mexico since 2001. That previous case, which was the first fatal attack in the state in a century, involved Adelia Trujillo. Authorities have urged the public to maintain distance from potentially dangerous wildlife and to report any bear sightings to local police.
