New Mexico rescuers evacuate 60 kg dog after hiking exhaustion

A 60 kg dog named Atlas required a major rescue operation after collapsing from exhaustion during a hike in New Mexico. Due to intense heat and the physical demands of the trail, the dog became unable to continue or descend on its own.

Officers from the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office conducted a five-hour rescue mission covering more than 6 km. Rescuers took turns carrying the dog on their shoulders and backs, using a rescue stretcher whenever possible to stabilize and evacuate him from the trail. The operation concluded without serious injury to the animal.

Authorities used the incident to remind hikers to prepare thoroughly when traveling with pets, emphasizing the need to carry sufficient water, monitor for signs of fatigue, and account for the difficulty of the return journey.
