New minimal devices aim to reduce smartphone screen time
New hardware designs are emerging to help users decrease smartphone dependency by providing limited functionality without digital distractions.
One such device is the ADHD ONE, an Anti Distraction Handset Device designed by Cologne-based designer Kevin Noki. The handset features a retro 1980s aesthetic with a physical 19-key keypad and a small OLED display. It does not have an independent mobile connection; instead, it connects to an iPhone via Bluetooth, allowing users to make and receive calls while keeping their primary smartphone out of sight to avoid social media and app notifications.
Another option is the XTEINK X4 e-reader, a slim, lightweight device measuring approximately 114 x 69 x 5.9mm. Designed to be portable and unobtrusive, it features physical buttons rather than a touchscreen and lacks a backlight. The device is compatible with magnetic rings for attachment to phone cases and supports custom firmware options.
