New non-destructive anti-drone technologies emerge
New non-destructive anti-drone technologies are being developed to secure critical infrastructure, airports, and urban environments.
Researchers at TU Wien have secured €200,000 for their project, NoctuaNet2, as part of the SPRIND “Anti-Drone Response 2.0” challenge. The system utilizes a modular ground sensor network paired with AI-driven visual detection to track intruding drones. Once identified, high-speed autonomous interceptor drones are deployed to capture the intruder mid-air using a specialized, durable net, rather than destroying the aircraft.
In a separate development, VANEA Defence has introduced ATOMZA, a system designed for civilian operators. Unlike traditional methods that jam communications or use GPS spoofing, ATOMZA employs optical disruption to blind a drone’s sensors. This approach aims to prevent the drone from navigating without destroying it, reducing the risk of falling debris in populated areas. The legal classification of optical disruption for civilian use remains subject to regulatory verification.
