New Norfolk, Tasmania, emerges as a cultural and culinary destination

New Norfolk, a historic town located a 40-minute drive from Hobart on the River Derwent, is emerging as a destination for food and culture. Established in 1807 by Norfolk Island evacuees on the traditional lands of the Big River People, the town has a diverse history ranging from its 1941 eucalyptus-based paper mill to its fertile hops farming landscapes.

The town features the Willow Court healthcare precinct, which originated in 1827 as a mental asylum. Willow Court has recently joined a global network of 365 Sites of Conscience, which recognize locations of past struggle and adversity in the pursuit of human rights.

Today, the area hosts various creative and culinary attractions, including The Agrarian Kitchen and the Black Swan bookshop at Arthur Square.
