New obesity classification models and oral GLP-1 drug developments

Researchers are proposing new methods for classifying obesity and developing more accessible treatments. A review published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism suggests moving away from purely weight-based or metabolic metrics. Instead, scientists from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center propose evaluating whether excess body fat damages organs and tissues or limits daily functioning to better determine treatment intensity.

In parallel, clinical developments are advancing the accessibility of weight-loss medications. A study published in Nature Medicine highlights aleniglipron, a new oral GLP-1 agonist. Unlike peptide-based treatments like semaglutide, which often require injections because the digestive tract breaks them down, aleniglipron is a small-molecule synthetic substance that can be taken as a standard tablet.

In clinical trials, participants taking the highest dose of aleniglipron lost an average of 12.1% of their body weight over 36 weeks. Because small-molecule drugs are potentially easier and cheaper to produce in large volumes than peptide drugs, this development could significantly impact the availability of obesity treatments.
