New opera productions announced in Uruguay and Spain
New opera productions have been announced in Uruguay and Spain. In Uruguay, Sodre and Pro Ópera are presenting a new production of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. Directed by Vivien Hewitt with musical direction by Miquel Ortega, the production relocates the original setting to the Banda Oriental in the early 19th century. The staging features a gaucho protagonist and is inspired by the works of painters Vidal and Blanes.
In Spain, the Auditorio de Tenerife is bringing the production The Golden Dragon to the Teatro Leal in La Laguna as part of the Ópera en minúscula cycle. Based on the play by Roland Schimmelpfennig and composed by Péter Eötvös, the contemporary tragedy uses a grotesque tone to explore social criticism through the story of a young Chinese woman in a multi-story building. The production is led by musical director Jordi Francés and stage director Bárbara Lluch.
