New organization launched to support Black politicians in Canada
A new non-partisan national organization has been established to support Black elected officials in Canada. The group, which currently has 150 members across all levels of government, aims to provide mentorship, encourage collaboration, and advocate for issues impacting Black communities.
According to a 2025 study by Carleton University and Operation Black Vote Canada, many Black Canadians report experiencing discrimination from the public, media, and fellow politicians while serving in or running for office. The study identified a lack of financial resources and volunteer shortages as significant barriers to political success.
While the Canadian Parliamentary Review noted that visible minority representation in the House of Commons reached 18.1 percent following the 2025 federal election, organizers emphasize that increased representation has not yet equated to full inclusion. Colleen James, the group’s chair and a councillor for the region of Waterloo, noted that Black officials often face stereotypes and the challenge of being the sole Black individual in decision-making spaces.
