New Orleans officials warn of viral fire challenge after boy suffers severe burns
New Orleans fire and police officials have issued an urgent warning to parents following an incident where a 9-year-old boy sustained burns to more than 70 percent of his body. The child was participating in the ‘fire challenge,’ a dangerous social media trend where individuals douse themselves in household accelerants, such as isopropyl alcohol or acetone, and ignite the liquid.
New Orleans Fire Department Chief Roman Nelson described the child as being in ‘unbearable pain’ and noted he was ‘lucky to be alive.’ Alongside Nelson, New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick released a video message condemning the practice, stating, ‘It’s very dangerous. It is not fun, and it is not funny.’
Officials are urging parents to discuss the hazards of such extreme online behaviors with their children. Kirkpatrick also addressed young viewers directly, advising them not to succumb to peer pressure or ‘fall for this gimmick,’ emphasizing that their lives are worth more than social media engagement.
