New Orleans Saints honor Superdome return anniversary

The New Orleans Saints are set to host the Atlanta Falcons at the Caesars Superdome on October 5, marking the 20th anniversary of the team’s historic return to the stadium following Hurricane Katrina.

On September 25, 2006, the Saints played their first home game in the Superdome after the stadium was heavily damaged by the storm. The team defeated the Falcons 23-3 in a game that became a symbol of the city’s post-disaster recovery. A defining moment of the match occurred when Steve Gleason blocked a punt by Atlanta’s Michael Koenen, which was recovered by Curtis Deloatch for a touchdown. This play is commemorated by a bronze statue titled ‘Rebirth’ located outside the stadium.

Prior to the Superdome’s reopening, the Saints played home games in various locations, including Baton Rouge, San Antonio, and New Jersey. The upcoming anniversary game serves as a celebration of the city reclaiming its identity and the resilience of the New Orleans community.
