New Orleans tests AI-powered 911 call triage system

The city of New Orleans is piloting an artificial‑intelligence system from the firm Carbyne to filter incoming 911 emergency calls. The AI acts as a triage layer, answering calls only when human dispatchers are already occupied and asking callers whether their report concerns an incident already being handled. If no new information is provided, the system ends the call, freeing operators to focus on unique emergencies. The test builds on a similar AI tool that has been used since April on the city’s 311 service hotline for routine inquiries. Officials highlight the potential to reduce duplicate calls and speed human response, while critics warn that the technology may misinterpret regional dialects, emotional speech or critical details, risking missed or delayed assistance.

The trial reflects a broader move toward digital assistance in emergency communications, with ongoing evaluation of reliability and safety before wider deployment.
