New research book chronicles struggles of 13 Nepali women leaders

A new research book titled ‘Shared Dreams Woven by Struggle’ has been launched in Lalitpur, documenting the lives and contributions of 13 women leaders involved in Nepal’s social movements. Published by Voices of Women Media, the book chronicles the journeys of women who fought against discrimination, organized communities, and advocated for social justice and dignity.

Key narratives within the book include Umadevi Badi’s struggle for land and rights for the Badi community, and the journey of Muskan Khatun, an acid attack survivor seeking justice. The publication also revisits the Sino Bahishkar Movement and highlights the efforts of women like Mahari Devi, Bhola Devi, and Chandeshwori Sada in challenging caste-based discrimination.

During the launch, Sunita Dangol, the Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, emphasized that documenting these histories is vital for establishing women’s own narratives in a society where their voices are frequently questioned. The event concluded with a panel discussion titled ‘Women Leaders and Social Movements: Reflections and Practices,’ featuring activists, academics, and researchers.
