New research links environmental factors and lifestyle to glucose levels

Recent scientific studies have identified significant factors influencing blood glucose levels and the potential for diabetes remission. Research led by Dr. Kaberi Dasgupta at McGill University suggests that early-onset type 2 diabetes—diagnosed before age 45—may be reversible through intensive lifestyle interventions. The study, presented at an European Association for the Study of Diabetes meeting, involved adults using a low-calorie diet of 800 to 900 calories per day combined with aerobic and resistance training.

Separately, an international study involving the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) has found associations between environmental exposures and metabolic health. Analyzing data from over 21,000 participants across six European countries, researchers identified that exposure to air pollution, specifically PM10 particles, and thermal variability are linked to higher levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). This research is notable for studying individuals without existing diabetes to observe metabolic alterations before the onset of the disease.
