New Research Shows Multimodal Exercise Reduces Falls and Pole Walking Improves Health in Seniors

A systematic review published in Frontiers in Public Health (July 2025) examined six randomized trials with 1,071 participants aged 60‑80. Multimodal programs that combined strength, balance and endurance training reduced fall‑related injuries by 20‑50 % and produced measurable gains in functional tests, lean body mass and bone density. Parallel reviews confirmed similar fall‑risk reductions, with a meta‑analysis of 37 studies reporting a 68 % overall decrease in falls when training exceeded 30 minutes three times a week for 12‑23 weeks.

A separate meta‑analysis of 22 randomized trials (1,271 participants, average age 62) published in Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics (2025) found pole walking (stavegang) superior to regular walking on every health metric measured. Benefits included lower systolic (‑2.9 mmHg) and diastolic (‑5.3 mmHg) blood pressure in those over 65, reductions in body weight (‑1.8 kg), body fat (‑1.5 %), waist circumference (‑2.2 cm), BMI (‑0.7 kg/m²), LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Additional analyses reported improvements in cognitive function, HbA1c (‑0.37 %), VO₂peak and heart‑failure performance. Pole walking activates about 90 % of muscle mass, increasing oxygen consumption by 20‑22 % and calorie burn by up to 46 % without higher perceived effort.

Both studies underscore the importance of combining strength, balance and aerobic activity for older adults, aligning with Norwegian health guidelines that recommend regular multimodal exercise to mitigate the nation’s high incidence of hip fractures and age‑related decline.
