New research ties flawed BMI measures and processed foods to higher dementia risk
Recent studies indicate that the traditional Body‑Mass‑Index often fails to identify clinical obesity, especially among individuals classified with a “normal” BMI. Researchers highlight the growing adoption of alternative risk indices—such as waist‑circumference measurements and bio‑electrical impedance scales—to better capture fat distribution and associated health hazards. Policy shifts are also noted, with France moving to cover the cost of weight‑loss medications and experts calling for revised dietary recommendations.
A separate nine‑year Harvard study of 5,370 U.S. adults aged 50 and older found that a diet high in ultra‑processed foods—including ready‑made meals, soft drinks, sweets, breakfast cereals and processed meat—was linked to a 58% higher risk of developing dementia and a 46% increase in mild cognitive impairment. Participants consuming the least processed foods showed a 41% lower dementia risk. While the research establishes a strong association, it does not prove causation, underscoring the need for more nuanced health assessments beyond BMI alone.
