New Review Links Youth Screen Time to Irreversible Brain Changes
Researchers published a conceptual review in the journal Brain Health that introduces the term “criticome” to describe how sensory, motor, social and cultural experiences from birth to age 25 can permanently shape brain development. Co‑author Dr. Julio Licinio of SUNY Upstate Medical University says the critical window extends up to 25 years and that early, intensive screen exposure may alter neural pathways that affect language, music, and other skills later in life.
The paper notes that screen‑heavy activities are highly stimulating, often leading children to find other activities boring, which can reduce social interaction, physical movement and sensory exploration. Clinical psychologist Melissa Greenberg added that this shift may contribute to childhood obesity, as screen time often replaces active play and can be paired with eating. The authors advise parents to limit children’s screen use and encourage more human interaction and varied offline experiences.
While the review does not provide definitive causal evidence, it calls for decades of longitudinal research and adds to a growing body of literature suggesting that reducing screen time could benefit long‑term cognitive and physical health.
