New Richland establishes disaster fund following devastating floods

Following recent heavy rains and flash flooding in New Richland, local organizations have established the New Richland Disaster Response Fund to support community and business recovery. The fund is a partnership between the New Richland Area Foundation, the Waseca Area Foundation, and the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF).

City officials report that approximately 10 to 12 homes may be declared a total loss due to the flooding. While standing water levels have dropped, saturated soil continues to cause issues in low-lying areas and basements. The New Richland Care Center sustained heavy damage, including the loss of its laundry facility and major electrical systems; however, all residents have been moved to safe accommodations.

City Administrator Tyler Lendt stated that the city is requesting a joint preliminary damage assessment from FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration. Temporary placements for displaced residents are being managed through various organizations, including the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Catholic Charities.
